Building Gym Confidence

I think we all experience insecurities or shyness when going into the gym – at least from time to time.

This can keep you away from the free weights, for example, or can keep you from trying that new piece of equipment that just might be the best thing for helping you achieve your goals.

Today, we’ll go over ways that can boost your gym confidence immediately. (video below)

Because at the end of the day, most people are training to better themselves, not to judge anyone. They’re usually more caught up in their own world.

Take your work seriously, but try not to take yourself seriously.

I think humor can be a great way to loosen up and not focus so much on what you think other people are thinking about you.

Gym Confidence Tip 1 – Dress for Comfort

What workout attire makes you feel good, comfortable, and able to train well?

This is an important question that only you can answer. When you’re comfortable, you worry less about your leggings hiking up or down, controlling your tummy, or other surface worries that may hinder your focus on the workout.

In the off-season, I used to feel very self-conscious, as I didn’t have a six-pack and I felt that people judged my softer body.

I found that wearing a longer shirt or baggy pants helped me not worry so much about my appearance and helped me simply focus on what I was there to do: train.

Gym Confidence Tip 2 – Write Out Workouts Ahead of Time/Have a Plan

Know exactly what you’re doing in the gym each day. If it’s written out or on your phone or in a log, you have reason to be anywhere in the gym and you have purpose.

If you’re feeling intimidated by the Smith machine, for example, you’ll feel better knowing exactly what exercise to do on it rather than trying to think of something on the fly.

Gym Confidence Tip 3 – Throw on a Hat and Earbuds

I used to train with a baseball cap down low most prep days. This helped for two reasons – I was able to stay more focused, as my line of sight was limited, and it made me feel more incognito/safe.

The physical act of limiting your line of sight can be helpful, as you’ll pay less attention to your surroundings and more attention to your workout.

Music not only drowns out gym jibber-jabber, but it can also improve mood. Think about what genre makes you feel good, and put a playlist together.

With your hat and earbuds, you’re really able to create your own bubble – the bubble of gains!

Gym Confidence Tip 4 – Stand Up Tall

If you’re feeling intimidated, chances are i’s showing in your body language. Take a deep breath and stand up tall.

Physically owning more space or taking up space will instantly give you more confidence. You belong here, my friend!

We go into the gym to improve, so if you aren’t where you want to be physically, don’t worry – you’re in good company with the rest of the 99% of us!

The gym will definitely change your life and it may just save your life. It saved mine.

It’s a welcoming community where you can gain inspiration, meet new friends, and achieve your goals. So get out there and train!
